VIYYALAVAARI VINDU
Rooted in the nostalgia of traditional South Indian communities, where evenings were often spent enjoying snacks on the verandahs (Gattu) of ancestral homes, this conceptual design seeks to recreate that warmth and familiarity through a contemporary dining experience. The restaurant is envisioned as a celebration of South Indian cuisine and culture, with a strong emphasis on outdoor seating that forms the heart of the space.
A defining feature of the design is the ceiling installation composed of hundreds of buttalu—traditional woven baskets once integral to daily life. Repurposed here as a dynamic ceiling screen, they filter natural light into a soft, diffused glow, creating a serene and evocative atmosphere throughout the restaurant. This design choice not only enhances the sensory experience but also revives a fading craft, providing employment and recognition to local artisans.
The project stands as a testament to how indigenous materials and age-old craftsmanship can be meaningfully integrated into modern spaces—offering guests more than just a meal, but a deeply cultural and sensory experience.
